When I was in 4th grade, we had to write a letter to a celebrity as a class assignment. I wrote my letter to Ricky Schroder from Silver Spoons. (I know it’s Rick now, but back then it was Ricky.) One of my classmates wrote to Ricky too. She told him that he was dreamy and that she loved his blonde hair and that she’d like to ride on his train. (That was not a euphemism; his Silver Spoons character had a train in his house, remember?)
I, however, wrote to Ricky and told him that I enjoyed his show and that I really enjoyed the character of Derek Taylor. (Which if you didn’t already know was played by Jason Bateman. My love for him goes back THAT far.) And that it’d be great if Derek could be in more episodes. A LOT MORE.
That may have not been the best approach to get Ricky to write me back. After that fail, I stopped writing to celebrities.
Until this week, that is. This week I wrote a more serious letter to Bruce Jenner. I think it’s pretty important. Please read it and let me know if I did a better job this time.

I just read your letter…it’s beautiful.
Thank you. And thank you for reading it and taking the time to leave a comment. xoxo
Perfect. And I knew it would be before I even read it.
I thought of you while watching the interview and wondered what it would be like for you. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I also thought of you while watching Transparent, which I assumed you saw because if its particular relevance to you. (Plus I now know that you have Amazon Prime–hope the sitz bath has helped–#FuckOffBart–xo).
Awww, Margot. You’re making me blush. Thank you. I have indeed watched Transparent–I love that show. And Jeffrey Tambor is an absolute favorite of mine.
P.S. Bart’s still here. Little fucker.
The letter is beautiful. Josephine is beautiful too. How inspiring your story of acceptance and adjustment is. Thanks for sharing.
PS: I lived Ricky too but was never brave enough to write a letter!
Thank you so much, Kristine. I’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response–I hope more people read it and respond the same.
And, I probably wouldn’t have written the letter to Ricky had it not been for the class assignment. 😉
This is a nice letter. The older I get, the more I realize that most of the stuff that passes for news and entertainment is just garbage. I didn’t watch the Bruce Jenner thing because, really, it’s none of my business. I hope (s)he is happy and fulfilled, just like I do for everyone else on the planet. I hope gay people can marry and be happy. I hope straight people can too. We spend a lot of time being busybodies worrying about other peoples lives and judging them when our own lives are a mess. I don’t care about celebrities private lives other than the extent they’ve overcome something that other folks are working on too and they want to share and help others. I don’t watch cable news because it’s mostly speculation and opinion that brings in advertising dollars.
I think we’d be a lot better off not judging others and just loving each other and being kind to each other.
Your post supports that and that’s what I like about your blog.
Good on you.
I’m right there with you, Dave. I do hope that given Bruce Jenner’s fame that the message of not judging and just loving each other and being kind to each other can become more pervasive. Especially with regards to the LGBTQ community.
Thank you so much for being here. xoxo
If only the whole world could just accept others and move on with their own lives and their own happiness. Well written.
Yes, that. Exactly that. Thank you so much for reading.
Sorry, can’t type… something in my eyes…
The letter was beautiful and the sentiment behind it even more so. At the end of the day we really are just people and people deserve to be loved.
That really is what we all are at the end of the day. Thank you for expressing that and for reading.
P.S. I had lots of allergies while writing the letter too.
Beautiful letter. So well put.
Thank you. And thank you for reading. xoxo
Outstanding letter! You have such a unique perspective on this and I’m so glad you are sharing your family’s story. I hope Bruce actually reads this one, because I love to imagine the smile on his face when he does. He’s a hero as far as I’m concerned. As is Josephine and everyone else that makes this transition.
That was just beautiful and heartfelt. I really do hope someone brings it to Mr. Jenner’s attention. I think he would think it’s a keeper.
Wonderful Letter!!!! You did an amazing job.
I also read the post about Josephine too. Since it was reported that Bruce was transitioning, I wondered how his children really felt. Were they angry, hurt, embarrassed….. all of which would be understandable. The one thing that I never included was a feeling of loss. I hope if they do feel a loss, it subsides as they realize that it isn’t really a loss, but another sort of transition for them as well.
Awesome letter tO Bruce Jenner!!!!
